SOUND

'Playing In The dark' by Rebekah Ashman

Through seeking inspiration from artists like Kahlil Joseph and Camille Normet I began to question the interdependence of both sound and memory; investigating the correlation between the two and considering space (placement) as a primary component. My piece ‘Playing in the Dark’ addresses the seemingly transcendental qualities spaces hold through a perceived reality. Having collected a variety of both mundane and somewhat unnerving pre-recorded sounds taken at the hospital where my father recently passed, I aim to communicate my fractured mind state through sonic abstraction.

For me the discourse around mental health and self-awareness is an urgent one. “Playing in the dark” a phrase often associated with works that literally interact with lighting is something I experiment with in my own work. However, I interpret it metaphorically in that my mind is where the darkness resides. I force myself to toy with my mental by drawing from my own personal trauma and reflecting on my religious upbringing in hopes to relinquish a sense of cognitive dissonance. By collecting my own-recorded sound from past and or recent experiences, I undergo a process of self-healing whilst actively questioning the boundaries of metaphysics.
